2009 Open Source CMS Market Share Report Highlights Content Management Leaders, Key Market Dynamics

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 30, 2009

The 2009 Open Source CMS Market Share Report was recently released and concludes that three brands – Joomla!, WordPress and Drupal – dominate today’s market. Since 2008, The Big Three have solidified their grip on the market, with Joomla! taking the lead in many indicators for the first time since the project’s launch in 2005.

The report follows the market share and brand strength indicators for 20 top systems, assessing each on a wide variety of traditional and Web 2.0 measures. The study focuses on identifying the market leaders, both in terms of rate of adoption and mindshare.

“This is the second year we’ve conducted the analysis. The report benefits greatly from expanded historical data and this year’s user survey,” states Ric Shreves, partner at water&stone and lead analyst on the report. “It’s clearly been a good year for Joomla!, but it’s also been a very positive year for a number of other projects, indicating the growing strength of open source offerings in the content management space.”

While WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal lead the survey set across a wide range of measures, the report also identifies other stars. Alfresco, a vendor focused on both document management and web content management, performed well across a number of categories and led the Java-based open source CMS race over its nearest rival, Liferay. DotNetNuke led the .NET-based open source CMS category, though the report goes on to identify reasons why that position may soon be changing. In addition to naming the market leaders, the study also identifies projects whose market share and brand metrics indicate they are at risk.

The Open Source CMS Market Share Report was launched in 2008 by digital agency water&stone. For the 2009 report, water&stone joined forces with CMSWire.com in order to create a more comprehensive and authoritative report. As a result, this year’s report covers more ground, and looks more deeply into the metrics. A key difference in this year’s report is the presence of direct evidence of adoption rates, brand awareness and brand sentiment, which was gathered by a survey of over 500 open source CMS users.

Web Content Management Vendors Focusing on SharePoint Integration

CMS Watch logo

Boston, MA, USA (PRWEB) October 9, 2008

Many Web Content Management Systems (CMS) vendors have spent the last year trying to differentiate on SharePoint integration, but the results have been mixed, according to new research from CMS Watch, an independent analyst firm that evaluates content technologies.

This conclusion stems from the most recent release of The Web CMS Report 2009, in which CMS Watch interviews web content management customers around the globe to evaluate forty solutions in the marketplace.

“Although many customers avoid SharePoint for Web CMS projects, they may still adopt it heavily for document collaboration — therefore they have to figure out how to integrate documents with web publishing systems, especially on Intranets,” said CMS Watch Analyst, Jarrod Gingras.

Many Web CMS vendors — including RedDot, FatWire, Immediacy, and others — have responded this year with new or updated “connectors” that enable web publishers to access documents in SharePoint’s repository. However, these connectors vary widely in scope and functionality. Some are bi-directional, while others are not, and not all can access SharePoint libraries as well as SharePoint lists. “A prudent customer comes to the table with specific requirements and test plans here,” explained CMS Watch founder Tony Byrne.

CMS Watch also found:

Other .NET-based CMS suppliers are thriving. In addition to Sitecore, Ektron, GOSS, Immediacy, and others, CMS Watch has begun coverage of Telerik and the open source DotNetNuke platform.

As more CMS vendors focus on interactivity management and dynamic page delivery, customers still report pervasive challenges deploying friendly URLs and accessible, search-optimized HTML code.

Some CMS vendors are renewing their emphasis on vertical industry solutions. “This is not a new phenomenon, but we’re seeing it particularly among the larger ‘ECM’ vendors, who frequently cannot compete effectively on their Web CMS technology alone,” commented CMS Watch Analyst, Kas Thomas

The Web CMS Report 2009 — published since 2001 and now in Version 15 — provides a comprehensive overview of forty web content management products and identifies current best practices. The Report is available in Global and European editions, and can be purchased online from CMS Watch .

Mid-market Web Content Management Vendors Thriving in 2010

Real Story Group

Boston, MA, The Hague, NL and Delhi, IN (Vocus) June 2, 2010

The ranks of viable, mid-market Web Content Management (“CMS”) vendors continue to grow as more vendors exploit the relatively slow uptake of SharePoint as a web publishing platform, according to new research released today by independent analyst firm Real Story Group (formerly CMS Watch).

Version 19 of Real Story Group’s Web CMS research evaluates 45 major vendors from around the world. The research includes expanded coverage of mid-market vendors who employ Microsoft’s .NET platform, such as DotNetNuke, Ektron, EPiServer, GOSS, Kentico, Sitecore, Telerik, and (forthcoming later this month) Umbraco.

“Savvier customers remain wary of SharePoint’s Web CMS capabilities, even in the platform’s 2010 edition,” says Real Story Group Analyst Apoorv Durga. “Many other vendors are filling the vacuum.”

Several vendors, such as Ektron and Sitecore, have developed packaged intranet solutions promoted as less developer-oriented than SharePoint. “A year ago we saw most of the mid-market Web CMS vendors working to integrate with SharePoint,” notes Real Story Group Analyst Adriaan Bloem. “Now increasingly they’re looking to challenge SharePoint more aggressively — and perhaps more importantly: compete intensely with each other.”

Microsoft-oriented Web CMS vendors compete with each other on several levels:

Price
Orientation: Product vs. Platform
Adherence to .NET and other Microsoft core technologies
Distribution model: reseller vs. direct

Meanwhile, the slow decline of former mid-market stalwart RedDot (Open Text Web Solutions) and impending demise of Immediacy (Alterian CMC) has not dragged down the mid-market as a whole. “The good news for customers — Microsoft-oriented or not — is that you have lots of plausible choices,” concludes Real Story Group president, Tony Byrne.

New Version of Internationally Renowned Open Source Content Management System Released

(PRWEB) March 16, 2005

Perpetual Motion Interactive Systems Inc., a premier Microsoft technology solutions provider, is pleased to announce the availability of DotNetNuke 3.0, the premier open source content management system for the Microsoft ASP.NET platform. This major release improves upon DotNetNukeÂ’s vast array of extensibility and usability features, offering forward compatibility with the much anticipated Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 (Whidbey) platform, and adding powerful Localization and Search capabilities. DotNetNuke 3.0 is the culmination of nearly a year of development by an international team of contributors and developers.

“Our community has taken a giant step forward with this release,” said Shaun Walker, DotNetNuke creator and maintainer. “While the usability improvements in DotNetNuke 3.0 have simplified content management tasks for end-users on an international scale, the new portal framework has empowered developers and designers to create richer, more powerful application resources for the growing community. I am very proud of the development team who has worked so hard on this release over the past eleven months.”

DotNetNuke 3.0 includes a significant number of breakthrough enhancements which improve its versatility, power, and accessibility. These include a more intuitive user interface, support for “drag-and-drop” content management, improved URL structuring for search engine indexing, and enhanced provisioning support for scriptable configuration. In addition, the application underwent an extensive code access security review so that it is capable of running in a Medium Trust hosting environment.

The following is a handful of the new features and improvements in DotNetNuke 3.0:

Membership, Roles, and Profile — Integration of the Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 (Whidbey) Membership, Roles, and Profile API allows DotNetNuke to conform to a common Membership model.

Localization — Administration user interfaces for DotNetNuke can now be easily localized into any language. The architecture is based on the Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 (Whidbey) localization system.

Field & Module Help — Localized field level help and module level help are now available on all administration user interfaces. This usability improvement helps transform DotNetNuke from a developer-oriented application to an intuitive end-user content management system.

Simplified & Organized Administrator UI – Administrator user interfaces have been reorganized to group common fields into collapsible sections to simplify the end-user experience, while still providing access to advanced functionality. A powerful new control panel has been added which encapsulates more of the common administrative functions.

Hoster Support – Improvements for Web Hosters include XML templates for scripting all aspects of the installation experience, feedback during the installation process, the ability to run in a Medium Trust environment, and optimized performance and memory consumption to maximize web server density.

The DotNetNuke 3.0 release also represents the launch of an exciting new program for the open source community. DotNetNuke will be sponsoring a number of third party sub-projects, providing an essential library of freely available, open source resources to augment the base portal framework. Sub-projects will conform to a set of formalized standards and will be able to take advantage of the established DotNetNuke infrastructure services and distribution channel. The first sub-projects to be announced are Forums, Blog, and Gallery modules contributed by AppTheory and TTT Corporation ( available immediately for BETA download from dotnetnuke.com ).

“We are very pleased to announce the contribution and release of the Forum, Blog and Gallery modules (based on the original code by Tam Tran Minh of TTT Corporation) as official DotNetNuke SubProjects,” said Bryan Andrews of AppTheory. “These modules, when integrated on the new DotNetNuke 3.x platform, provide a compelling solution set for collaboration and community building, and we know this contribution will be one of many exciting new DNN SubProjects!”

DotNetNuke 3.0 is available for free download. The full application source code and sub-projects are distributed under a standard BSD open source license; providing the maximum freedom in both non-commercial and commercial environments. About Open Source

The basic idea behind Open Source is very simple: When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, and people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing.

Filling the Niche for Small Businesses in Need of Integrated Customer Relationship Management Solution

Charleston, SC (PRWEB) March 13, 2007

When it comes to managing customer relationships, many small businesses can be left in the dark. Today’s customer relationship management (CRM) applications are not built for smaller businesses trying to implement a solution for a handful of users with a small budget. Active Modules, Inc., a leader in modular software development, announced today a new solution to fill that void for smaller businesses that need a CRM system built for a big business with its Customer Relationship Management (CRM) application, Active CRM™.

“I’ve spent several years providing consulting services to smaller companies trying to implement CRM systems built for hundreds of users,” said Will Morgenweck, President of Active Modules Inc. “A common problem seemed to exist — scaling back a CRM system without losing key functionality and integration abilities was nearly impossible. Even those organizations that had successful implementations still faced problems with integrations to their websites, email systems and other e-commerce communication applications.”

Active CRM™ will provide small businesses with the necessary tools needed to be successful in today’s marketplace. Active CRM™ allows for easy integration with any ASP.NET or DotNetNuke website, while still allowing for integration with other website platforms. Key features of Active CRM™:

1. Browser-based application — allows for easy maintenance, remote access and minimal workstation requirements

2. Easy to install on existing server — eliminates the need to purchase more hardware

3. Low implementation costs — reduces the costs of implementing without sacrificing functionality or losing integration capabilities

4. Role-based security — provides organizations with varying levels of data security by setting user permissions to restrict users to certain areas within the application and from viewing certain data

5. Unique and intuitive interface — ensures user adoption with easy-to-use screens, natural flow of processes and an interface that guides users to the next step

6. Scalable architecture leveraging proven technologies — allows companies to grow the application as their business grows by easily integrating to other modules or software applications built on the same platforms.

Active CRM™ is comprised of two modules — Sales & Marketing and Service & Support.

Active CRM™ Sales & Marketing module lets you:

Easily track and manage companies, customers, leads and opportunities

Create and edit sales orders

Maintain catalog of products and services for use throughout entire system

Customize the dashboard to display new sales, latest opportunities and recent leads.

Active CRM™ Support & Service module lets you:

Easily create and track support tickets, work order requests and case history

“Active CRM™ simplifies the communication process at all angles — within your organization, with sales prospects, and to customers,” states Morgenweck. “In today’s web-centric world, a typical business has several methods by which they may interact with a customer or sales lead. The difficult task is making sure that the information that is exchanged during each piece of this communication process is captured and easily accessible. With Active CRM™ this type of integrated communication process is possible for even the smallest organization.”
